We all want to be strong, right? To resist shattering under the pressures of life. That’s why we decided to do a message series called Shatterproof. During the month of February, we have devoted ourselves to learning about the basic spiritual practices that are designed to keep us from breaking, and we invite you to join us in committing to one of those practices called fasting. Below are some helpful resources to better understand what fasting is all about.
Join Pastor Adam, the staff, elders, and many others in our congregation on February 26-28. When you sign up, our staff and elders want to send you updates as a source of encouragement and partnership as we fast together.
We look forward to hearing about what God is doing in your lives and in our community as we seek Him fully!
Here are a few additional verses to keep close to your heart during the fast:
Luke 4:1-2 (NIV) Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
Matthew 4:4 (NIV) Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV) When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Isaiah 58:6-7 (NIV) Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Acts 13:2 (NIV) While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Exodus 34:28 (NIV) Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.
Esther 4:16 (NIV) Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.
Ezra 8:23 (NIV) So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.
Nehemiah 1:4 (NIV) When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
Daniel 10:2-3 (NIV) At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.
Joel 1:14 (NIV) Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.
Joel 2:12 (NIV) “Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
